No Champions League Will Not Change Chelsea Transfer Plans – Keown

It has been revealed that Arsenal defender Martin Keown has stated his belief that Chelsea will remain an attractive destination for players next season despite the lack of Champions League football.

Following their disappointing elimination from the Round of 16 of the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea seem set to miss out on Europe’s elite club competition next year for the first time in 13 years.

Many believe that the lack of elite European football will hamper Chelsea’s chances of signing top players during the summer but Keown does not agree and has stated that the Blues’ financial might should help them sign their desired targets.

Keown wrote for the Daily Mail: “I think money talks. Chelsea’s plight this season would have been unthinkable this time last year, but they are still a huge draw.

“When this dynasty started under Roman Abramovich, the cash was rolled out and that money helped take the league from Arsenal.

“They were able to buy their way back into contention and it worked. Before Abramovich came in, Chelsea had some very good players – Marcel Desailly, Gianfranco Zola, Frank Lampard – but then they paid big money to really build on that core.

“I wonder if it might be a similar blueprint for the future. They still have some excellent players in that squad and there’s no question they’ve got the money to bring in more on huge salaries.

“With a new ground on the way I’m sure Abramovich will want a team that befits the new stadium.

“All great teams do come to an end and with John Terry seemingly on his way out, it looks like the last part of the spine of that great team has gone. But there’s no question Chelsea will still be going after the best in the game in the summer.”
