Wigan Athletic 1-1 Chelsea – Match Highlights
Petr Cech blundered badly as Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez dented Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes with a late equaliser in a turgid 1-1 draw at the DW Stadium.
The gigantic Chelsea keeper Cech spilled Hugo Rodallega’s weak shot at goal as Gomez slipped the rebound home on 86 minutes to deny the visiting side a fourth straight win under manager Andre Villas-Boas.
In a match of few chances, neither side did enough to merit the three points but Chelsea seemed to have scraped the win when the lively Daniel Sturridge bounded onto Ashley Cole’s long ball to slam a shot beyond Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi on 59 minutes. It was his eighth league goal of the season.
The mood of the 3,000 or so visiting supporters all changed with Cech’s astonishing error handing third-bottom Wigan an unlikely point in their battle to avoid relegation.
More pertinently, Chelsea – who remain third in the standings – are six rather than four points adrift of leaders Manchester City only days after downing City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.
